The Basset Hound is seen as an especially friendly breed. For this reason they are an excellent pet for
children. However, they can be stubborn animals. Although some people believe that Bassets are not
particularly intelligent, they are quite smart and display their intelligence with a charming sense of humor.
They are known as the "clowns of the dog world".

Because Bassets are scent hounds, they should always be on a leash when out on walks. Although they
are well known to be lazy, they have a tendency to run -- especially after prey -- so a leash is very
important for their safety. Even though Bassets sleep a lot, walks are still necessary.

Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. Bassets might howl or bark when they want something or to
suggest that they think something is wrong . They also use a low, murmuring whine to get attention, which
sounds to many owners as though their Bassets are "talking." This whine is also used by the hound to beg
(for food or treats) and varies in volume depending on the nature of the individual hound and length of
time it has been begging.

RECOMMENDED READING
Known for his long, pendulous ears, his short, powerful legs and his sweet and somehow sad expression, the
Basset Hound is a noble and determined scent-hound, capable of hunting for hours on end, who thrives on
being involved in his owners’ daily life. The Basset Hound is regarded as an ideal family dog, adaptable and
affectionate, protective and trainable. For an owner seeking an easygoing, steady companion and watchdog
who requires quite little of his owner, the Basset Hound will not disappoint. This book provides the much-needed
factual information about the Basset Hound and his ancestry, character and standard, as well as puppy
selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and showing. The new owner will welcome advice about
preparing for the pup’s arrival, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems.

In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove
to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide
easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Basset Hound from puppyhood to the
senior years.
